Dear Body

Dear body...

I'm sorry I have abused you for so long. I'm sorry I've put you through so much when you have had to carry me the whole way.

I promise to think things through more often. I don't promise to be perfect or anywhere near it, but I promise to be better to you.

Dear feet...

I'm sorry I have stuffed you into uncomfortable shoes and put you through long days of nothing but standing.

Thank you for supporting me. You allowed me to climb the Great Wall of China. You allowed me to run out of my demolished house when a tornado rolled through it. You allow me to feel the sand between my toes on the beaches of the world. You allow me to do so many things and I promise to treat you to pedicures more often and wear uncomfortable heels less often.

Dear legs...

I'm sorry I call you fat and don't want to show you off.

You allowed me to run my first 5K, supporting a body that may not have been ready for that yet!

Dear stomach...

I'm sorry I gained so much weight that automatically went to you. I'm sorry I eat bad food even though I know you will get upset and I'm sorry that I hate you more than anything on my body.

I promise to reevaluate the things I am eating that will cause you so much pain. I promise to concentrate on you throughout my weight loss. And I promise to *try* to hate you a little less.

Dear arms...

You allowed me to pick up the children in my life and flip them upside down, give them kisses, give them piggy pack rides, give them hugs and so much more. You wrap around the people I love.

Dear hands...

You are my primary sense of touch. You let me touch someone's face while I kiss them. You let me work and type. You let me cook, clean and be productive.

Dear mouth & lips...

I'm sorry I look in the mirror and hate my lips. I'm sorry that I didn't take care of my teeth well enough when I was little and now have too many fillings.

Thank you for allowing me to say "I love you", "I miss you" and so many other things. Thank you for allowing me to sing, smile and kiss. And thank you for allowing me to taste foods from all around the world.

Dear nose...

I'm sorry that you are allergic to everything! I'm sorry I don't take my medication or go get the injections you need so you're not stuffy and sneezy.

You give me my sense of smell, allowing me to smell mom's cooking or the scent of a man fresh out of the shower.

Dear ears...

Thank you for allowing me to enjoy a symphony, opera or musical. Thank you for allowing me to hear the voices of the people I love. Thank you for all sounds you allow me to hear - from dogs barking to birds chirping to children laughing.

And dear eyes...

I'm sorry I strain you by not wearing my glasses when I read or drive. I'm sorry I expose you to the sun because I don't want to wear sunglasses since they make my face break out.

You have allowed me to see so much throughout my life. Colors, animals, places and people. You produce my tears when I am upset or crying out of pure joy. Without you, I would be lost.

So thank you, body. I know I put you through strain and abuse. I only have one of you and I will do my best to remember to take care of you.

Regrets & Disappointment

Ahhhhh, love. When will you find me?
Need I remind you that I am now 31 years old and I would like to be married and have children one day?

I've spent a good amount of time in the past couple weeks thinking about love. What had happened was....

I had been talking to this guys for 2-3 months before we actually went out. We talked every day or two and texted throughout the day, every day. There was obviously a connection and we seemed to have a lot in common. We went out a couple times and he made a point to tell me how much he liked me, how he didn't want to leave, blah blah blah. I really liked him. And maybe I didn't realize it at the time; I really liked him. Then BAM, gone. No calls, no texts, no response of any kind - nada. So for about a week, I was really upset about it. I was upset because I really don't think I did anything wrong. But even more importantly, as I realize now, I was upset because I allowed myself to really like him. We had great phone conversations, we were at similar places in life and the chemistry was there. I really thought it was possible that he would be around for a long time, but it didn't work out that way and so I was upset.

Then I went to Michigan to hang out with some old college friends. And my Physician friend proceeds to go into the details of how dangerous it is to have a child at 35 or older. Obviously at 31, chances are that I would not meet a guy, fall in love, get married, spend some time married and alone with each other and then have children all before 35. This makes me realize more than ever that I wasted too much damn time loving one person who did not deserve it, at least not for that length of time.

I've made a pact with a couple of single friends (there are only a couple left!) to get ourselves out there more. Next week I'm going to a singles bartending event downtown and then next weekend the three of us are having a single girls night out downtown. I'm trying to concentrate on bettering myself and being more social/meeting new people. Who knows, maybe my next post will be completely different!

OMG

OK so I literally just figured out about one minute ago that I may just set goals that are a bit much. Go figure. So I'm not going to meet my 50 pound goal by July 11, but I'm happy to say that I'm back on track again. When I had my gallbladder out a couple weeks ago, everyone told me how horrible the post-surgery diet is and how much weight I would lose. Boy were they wrong. Before the surgery, I couldn't eat anything dairy or anything with high fat. So I limited myself to a lot of fruit and bread. But after I had a pretty solid recovery, that left me craaaaaving all the types of food I had missed out on. So no weight loss post surgery (actually a 0.6lb gain), BUT this week I lost 3.2lbs. 37 pounds total. So it won't be 50 by July 11, but hopefully it will be somewhat close.

And on to my next goal that I can honestly say is not "a bit much" but more like a "I bit off more than I can chew" type goal. Today I signed up for a half-marathon. Between getting a bug in my head that keeps telling me to get out and do more things AND wanting to have another goal for my weight loss, I told myself I could do this. And after a couple of grueling nights on the treadmill, I realize this is really not looking good. I have 12 weeks and two of my friends are joining me, so I'll train my hardest! But at this point I can only run (slowly) for about 2 minutes....and then of course I need a rest because I'm dying. This is all fine and dandy, but the catch is that you cannot slow down below a 13 minute mile or they take you out of the race! "I can do that!" I thought. Then I realized that this basically means you cannot walk much at all. Walking at a 4 puts you at a 15 minute mile. Which equals me being booted out of the half marathon. Anyway, I'll try my hardest and if I don't make it, at least I tried. But if I do make it, I will be so proud of myself!!

I'm not giving up on myself this time, people. I might fall off track every once in awhile, but the end goal is in sight.

10% of me, gone!

Well I finally hit my 10% goal in my weight loss AND I lost quite a few pounds above that! I'm down a total of 33 pounds. WHOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO! Next goal - 50 pounds by July 11. That's when I'm taking a trip to Michigan to see some of my old college friends. Wow, that makes me sound really old, "old college friends"! I haven't seen anyone that I used to live with/hang out with in Michigan for 10 YEARS! I'm very excited, it will be awesome to catch up.

60 pound goal for Mexico in August!

The part I struggle with is that I have SO MUCH further to go. I'm not scheduled to hit my goal weight until next April. :( So while it's so nice to be able to see that big 33 pound weight loss, it's daunting to see how much more I have to lose. Sometimes that sets me back. But I've got a great group of girls that are back on track now for Weight Watchers. And Karla is doing awesome and we are both very competitive, so that definitely helps. But she's almost done! Only about 10 more pounds and she's at her goal weight - WAY TO GO, KARLA!! And now a couple of my other friends are doing WW so I hope everyone sticks with it so we can motivate each other!

To next April!

wooooooooooooot!

26.2 pounds my friends! I'm on my way (or on my "weigh", hehe). I'm so thankful for the people that are supporting me. We started off with 6 people in our group, but most people don't show up for meetings anymore and don't seem very into it. Everyone says they're back this week - I hope so! It is much easier when we are all supporting each other. And I'm so proud of Karla - down over 23 pounds and almost to her goal already! Jeaaaaaaalouuuus! :)

A new me is coming!

I did it!

I lost 4.6 pounds this week so I'm down over 20 pounds total! WHOOHOOO!!! Don't let me give up, people! By the end of the year, I'm going to be at my goal weight!

On a Mission!

So I'm on a mission this week. So far, I'm down 16.8 lbs at WeightWatchers. MY VOW is to make it to the 20 lb mark on Thursday! I've been really good, and I've even worked out 3x so far this week. Wish me luck!

Mexico

Just got back from an awesome work vacation where I was able to bring my BFF Kristie. Met some great people and had a fantastic time. Thought I'd post a few photos.

Week 4

Week 4 of Weight Watchers - I fell off the wagon! I gained 1.8 pounds. We had one very long night of drinking that didn't help, I struggled with restaurant eating, and the meals I made from my WW cookbook were not very good. So, I struggled and I knew I gained before I stepped on the scale. But I'm not giving up....today I'm cooking meals for this week that I know I will like. I WILL get on the treadmill too! :)
Next weekend, I'm going on a Caribbean cruise for work. I'm taking one of my BFFs, Kristie with me. I know it will be a blast but I'm a little worried about being healthy while we're gone. I think I'll be OK on the eating part, but plan to do some drinking. So I am telling myself that I will go to the ship's gym each day. Wish me luck!! :)

A new me

So most everyone around me knows that I joined Weight Watchers this year with 5 of my best work girls. It's been awesome! The six of us go to meetings every Thursday morning together and get weighed in. And we try to eat lunch together at work every day and to keep track of each other. It's really nice to know that we each have the support of the whole group - we get praise when we need it and we get a kick in the ass when we need it! And it also helps that my BFF Massiel is doing WW online! So I've been doing really good (see below!), the group has been doing really good and I feel like I can keep on going with this new lifestyle. The first week of each month, we plan to take a group photo so we can see our progress as a team. I'll post the first photo from the beginning of January as soon as I get it and next week we'll have another one!

Week 1 - lost 7.4 lbs
Week 2 - lost 3.2 lbs
Week 3 - lost 5.6 lbs
So far - down 16.2 lbs!

dumps

I've been a little down in the dumps lately.

Work has taken a pretty big hit with the economic situation and we've had to go through difficult job eliminations of people that were close to us. Nothing I do ever seems quite good enough. I'm constantly hearing "why haven't you done this" and "you better get some revenue through this door or we're not going to be here much longer". I feel like I'm letting my employees down on a daily basis. I wake up in the morning and the first thing I say, physically, out loud, is "NOOOOO!!" It's not that work is so horrible or anyone there is so awful, it's just everything added together on top of feeling down in the dumps.

My friends are great. But I don't see my old friends that often and usually most of them don't have any money to go do anything. Not going out much doesn't help the down in the dumps feeling. Most of my friends are married and/or have kids. And let me put out the disclaimer that I love them all, I really love all their children and I'm very happy that they're happy (mostly!). But sometimes it's just a reminder of what I don't have and what doesn't appear to be lurking around the corner. Sometimes being surrounded by marriage and kids (and sometimes hearing about little other than kids) makes me feel down in the dumps.

Which brings me to my next subject - the good ol' love department. I'm very comfortable living alone and I'm very adjusted to my lifestyle. But sometimes that scares me. I'm a little too comfortable. I get used to being alone and sometimes don't even think about the fact that time is creeping up on me. No, I know I'm not 40 or 50 years old. But I'm 30 and I am alone. I spent far too much time with the same guy, who brought me many good things in my life, but who I held onto for far too long. I'm 30 and alone, and no relationship appears to be coming in the near future. So the thought that I could be alone forever gets me down in the dumps.

But all the down in the dumps feelings aside, tonight I have decided to get on the ball. I finally got my butt back on the treadmill. It makes me feel better, physically and mentally. And not to mention that it can't hurt in the "finding a man" department! I'm making the decision to care more about how I look and present myself, instead of being comfortable the way I am. I'm going back downtown to take another class in January, even though I don't have to. And I will get out there and do more things, even if I have to go by myself. I know I've said this before, but I WILL. NO MORE DOWN IN THE DUMPS!

To my girls

To the ones that keep me sane (somewhat) at the 'Shoe...

The database girls...to Mirta and Alissa who deal with a constantly changing environment that is somehow, at the same time, routine and unchanging from day to day. Dealing with unhappy guests, unhappy hosts, unhappy employees who think many of their problems are our department's fault. Staring at tiny numbers on the screen day in and day out. Living with the reality that in this one department, if a tiny mistake is made, it can cost our company millions of dollars and can cost us our gaming licenses and careers. To Mirta and Alissa. And to Tanya, who above anyone that I work with, keeps me together. She deals with my mood swings and my constant over-organizing and under-organizing at the same time. She dealt with the loss of a manager in our department by taking on COUNTLESS additional responsibilities without complaint. She is often at work with me, side by side, into the late hours of the night...again, without complaint. To Tanya.

The graphics girls...to Sway and Lili who try their best to accommodate every single last minute request (usually with nowhere NEAR enough information). Who keep the front-of-house looking good and who keep our guests informed. Who deal with strict deadlines without a negative thought. Who are creative minds stuck in the world of making signs and informational cards. To Sway and Lili.

The retail girls...to Kathy and Stacy. Who have just gone through a very rough and emotional time, dealing with staffing adjustments, including the loss of some employees in their department. Who sat side by side with me, dishing out rough news, trying to console a room full of crying employees during an extremely hard conversation. Kathy, who keeps the department running smoothly and Stacy, who never fails to smile when times are tough. To Kathy and Stacy.

Having dinner and drinks at my house for these girls is by far the least I can do. Nothing would be the same without them. And we had a great time together and will never forget - Mirta's pole vault, Alissa's knowledge of the Edsel, Tanya's inability to figure out which side to pull the cards from, Kathy refusing to drink my long-expired coffee, Lili's insane closed-eyes drawings and Stacy's belief that people have six senses. Good times!

And to the employees we lost since the last get-together, I truly hope that things are going well for them and miss having them around the office. I wish each of them the best of luck and hope to see them soon and to hear the news of exciting things that are going on in their new careers and in their lives in general.

Thankful

At the beginning of this holiday season, I have come to realize again how lucky I am. I have wonderful friends and family, good health, a nice home that I have made for myself and a good job. Through Facebook, I have been put back in touch with people from my past. Most of them are doing great, many have been through some tough times. And I'm so proud of them all - everyone I have gotten back in touch with has really made something of themselves. Sometimes you have to just sit back under the lights of the Christmas tree and really just be thankful for the things you have in your life.

Let's Go Go Go, White Sox!

Best game of my life. I'm so glad I sucked up the big bucks for a standing room ticket, made friends with an usher, and stood behind home base. So much fun. And, Wise gave me a high five. Bring on the Rays!

2008?

OK so time to check in on my 2008 plan. This weekend I realized, I finally have a life. School is over, I've mostly kept a promise to myself in the last month to work no more than 10 hours per day and I feel like I finally have some control. I can make plans with family and friends. I bought a treadmill a couple of weeks ago and I'm doing pretty good with that and with eating healthy. I vow for my treadmill to NOT BECOME A CLOTHES HANGER! Haha. My house is even pretty clean! World, I'm ready for you!

Satellite stinks

Here I am, home from working working and more working and heading into a 3-day weekend. I've been eating good and working out, and I decided - SELF, let's get some fast food and just go home and relax on the couch tonight watching TV.

DishNetwork had a different plan for me. :(

I'm a Hack

So for weeks (or months), I've been kinda down, trying to figure out where my life is headed. I finally graduated school and got a promotion, things should be good right? I thought I'd see my friends and family more and that work would be going better. But that didn't happen. My old position at work didn't get refilled so I ended up doing more than one job and working a lot (and stressing a lot). I ended up thinking - I'm 30 years old. I'm alone. And sure, I'm successful at my job, but is there more to my life than my job? I don't want to be the 40 year old, never married, no kids, workaholic who wishes she did more with her life. I contemplated leaving my job, starting over, trying to figure out what I wanted. It wasn't that I wasn't thankful for everything I have, because I am. I'm so thankful to the people that have provided for me, pushed me to go further and supported me. But I started wondering if it was what I really wanted.

But than I realized I'm a big gigantic jerk.

I have a stable job. I make a decent amount of money. I own my own home. Sure, I don't have anyone to share it with at the moment, but I'm in a good place in my life. I started to look around and realized that I was overthinking everything. There are a lot of issues around me, everywhere I look. My stepdad is starting dialysis and things are really not going well for him. My real dad, well, most of you know that story, he's long gone. My brother is closing down his business and having a hard time. My mom needs to figure out how she'll deal with my stepdad's illness and in the end, how she might have to live without him. Friends-one with her newborn baby in the hospital, one having relationship troubles, one scared to lose her job. All of this going on, and here I am complaining about my life. I'm a hack, I tell you! :)

I guess all of the things going on around me added up. Then add in work and being by myself and I just started to get stressed out. I started wondering if my life was by choice or by default. But today I realized...what a jerk I am. I've got more important things to worry about right now, like being there for my family and friends.

And to all of you, I'm sorry for not being there as much as I should.

Sincerely,

The Hack

A good month

It's been a great month.
For my 30th birthday, I went to Cabo with Karla, Stacy and Ami (see below). It was a blast! I miss it already. Then we had a big bash at my brother's house for my 30th, his 40th and my mom's 60th. While I wish it wasn't 90 degrees and tornadoing outside, it was still fun!
Last week my promotion was finally announced at work. Assistant Director of Marketing - I'll be over Internet, Advertising, Graphics, Database and Retail. Now if I can just get someone hired in my old spot, I'd be good to go!
Saturday I GRADUATED FROM KELLOGG SCHOOL OR MANAGEMENT AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY!!!!!!!!!!! The graduation was long and extremely hot, but damn it, after all that work, I was determined to walk across that stage. We left the graduation and I threw an 80's party downtown! It was so much fun, everyone really had a blast. Most people dressed up (see my pic above) and looked totally tubular. A totally fitting end to a totally awesome month, celebrating with all of the people who are closest to me.
Ahhh, do you hear that? That's the sound of freedom.

I'M DONE

I'M DONE!

I'M DONE, I'M DONE, I'M DONE!!!

I just finished my last final. Now, as long as I don't fail either of my classes, a week from Saturday, I'll be one of THESE people! And then I plan to have a life!!!! :)

Going CRAZY

I'm SO close to being done with school. All that stands in my way now are two final exams. I'm done with going to class, I'm done with group work, just two finals left. BUT I CAN'T GET THROUGH THEM!!!

#1 - I have no ambition. I'm done, I've had enough.
#2 - The final I'm in the middle of taking at this very second makes absolutely no sense. This is the worst class I have eve tken in my life. The professor makes no sense, I'm learning nothing. Somehow I have to BS my way through. It will be done today. Of course, it's due today. :)
#3 - The other final that has to be done by Friday - so boring. I have no interest in anything that this class has taught me. The work is difficult. The final is timed. I got the 2nd worst grade on the midterm. Therefore, I have some major studying to do.

This quarter was rough. Two classes I detested going to and attempting to balance additional work at the 'shoe on top of it. I can't wait to be done. I cannot wait. Someone better have a drink with me on Friday. :)

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Ahh, Cabo

Ahh, I miss you, Cabo. I spent my 30th birthday in Cabo San Lucas - a 3 night trip with Karla, Ami and Stacy. It wasn't long enough! One of the most beautiful and relaxing places to be, I can't wait to get back again. Some pics below of birthday night.

The start of the evening (drink #1)

Drink # ??? (but our first "yard" of the trip)

How I felt to leave Cabo :(

I will miss you, Cabo. And personally, I don't think my 30th birthday counts if it's spent in another country. Isn't that how it works?

Life Updates

Weight Loss Update - this week I lost 4 lbs. Granted, I've been sick for over a week so I'm sure that has something to do with it, especially since I did not work out or eat healthy. But, I'm down 23 pounds since having my tonsils out. Only 5 million more to go! :)

Work Update - about to go insane. Trying to transition into a new role while still doing my old role and taking on some projects from my boss that just left. Oh, and go to Northwestern at the same time. Yay! At least at work I'm moving forward and taking on some more interesting projects. I just can't wait until we can get someone to take over my old position so that I can devote my time to my new role. 08-08-08 everyone, come on out to the BRAND NEW Horseshoe Casino. There will be nothing else like it.

School Update - in just 57 days, I'll GRADUATE! Just in time. I'm done - I'm just totally exhausted and ready to have at least a little bit of life control back. I think that the moment I walk out of my last class or finish my last final, I'm going to be an uncontrollable emotional mess. I can't even imagine the feeling of knowing that ALL this hard work is over. OVER! I will be so proud of myself...it has been a long hard journey to say the least.

Rockin'

It's worth blogging about again. A SECOND Grand Slam by Crede! We're only 2 weeks into the season! And you wanted to trade him. For shame, for shame. Tsk, tsk.

Monday, April 7, 2008

Ahh, do you feel that? It's baseball season!

After fighting baseball for most of my life, I am now in love with the White Sox. And more specifically, Mr. Joe Crede. Baseball means the beginning of spring, awesome summer nights at Comiskey and (hopefully) a postseason in the fall. I love the team camaraderie of the Sox. I love that they are all absolutely loving playing the game. And I love that people had already counted them out for the season, but they come storming out with a sweep, the AL player of the week and a grand slam in the first week. And again, more specifically, my little Crede. :) After all the talk of people wanting to TRADE my favorite player, he is ROCKING this season so far. A 0.393 average, 10 RBIs and a grand slam already! Way to go, Joe.

Week 4!

week 3 - I lost 2.5 lbs. Which is pretty high considering I didn't eat very good during a work trip. Will it catch up to me?

week 4 - It's Friday (week ends on Sunday) and I've worked out 2 times (tomorrow will make 3). And I've eaten good every day except one (damn pizza and beer!)

And in bigger news, only 77 days til graduation!! One week down in my last quarter, nine to go. AND I GOT TWO A'S LAST QUARTER!!!!!! Go me, go me. :) I told you. 2008 is my year. Why don't you just listen to me already?

week 3

im on my way! :)

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Awesome

97 days til graduation. It was pretty awesome when that count went down into the double digits. 48 hours from now I'll be done with finals (stressing!) and this quarter will be over with. ONE MORE QUARTER!!! Now, that being said, I am very nervous about the last quarter. I picked a couple very time-intensive classes and I know that work is going to be very demanding in the next few months, so I'm very worried about balancing the two (not to mention the "other" things in life like family, friends, working out, etc). BUT I'M ALMOST DONE!!!!!! WHOOHOO!!

PS still doing pretty good on the health-watch. Worked out a couple times this week and ate pretty darn good. :)

Back on Track

I went back to the gym today. After being a big giant loser and not going to the gym since AUGUST when I signed up, I'm back on track. Kristie and Massiel and I have a little weight loss challenge going on, so hopefully that'll work out for all of us. And Stacy, Karla and I have another little challenge going on at work so we can getmore in shape before Cabo in a few months. I'll keep you updated on my weekly progress! (It better be progress!)

Thank You

To those who make the choice to give up their family, friends, loved ones and sometimes their lives to serve our country.

To people in the past, present and future who put themselves in harms way on a daily basis for us. Those who live in unknown countries and who are lonely and scared.

To those who go through an unimaginable experience in those countries, and then come home to flashbacks, horrible memories and people who question the very reason they fought for us.

To those who come back injured and who do not receive the medical services they deserve after serving our country.

To the people that fight for the rights that the rest of us take for granted.

To those that have given their lives for us. To those who have lost their loved ones to war.

To those that are so unselfish that they volunteer for the very things the rest of us live in fear of.

To those that give us freedom that we will never truly be appreciative enough of.

Thank you. Thank you more than you will ever know.

Monday, February 4, 2008

Hmm...

The big 3-0 is coming up. And I'm taking after Kristie and having difficulties with the number. (At least it's at 30, and not at 23!) I know I've done a lot with my life, and I'm proud of what I've done, how far I've come and the person that I am. But I can't help looking at that number. 30. 30! I think the trouble I have with it is that I'm going to be 30 and (most likely) single. I like single, single is fun. I live by myself, I have no one to answer to. No fights. No "put the seat down!" No one to try to tell me what to do. I like single, and 99% of the time, I'm perfectly OK with it. But not forever.

I guess I always thought that I'd be married and have kids, or at least think about having kids by 30. Obviously that's not happening. Which is OK...but there's not even the prospect of that right now, and that's what's scary. I think what scares me more is the kids part. I can't imagine life without having children. And yes, I'm sure I'm just overthinking everything and it'll all work out once I have more time to actually go out and meet people. But I find myself asking..."Self, would I have kids alone? Would I be a single mom?" And I think the answer is yes. Only because I feel SO strongly about having children. It hurts to hear people talk about their kids, to see the love they feel for their kids, and the love they return. It hurts to think I may not see a little one look back at me with my own eyes or nose or cheeks.

So dammit, 30! Why are you making me think all of these things?? :)

Not Part of the Plan

Today, like every other work day, I woke up with a horrible feeling. The feeling that says "you just cannot go into that place today." I dragged myself to work despite being really upset that I just did not want to go (like every other work day). I started my day with three crabby bosses emailing my blackberry non-stop while I was in a 4-hour meeting. I had to leave the meeting because they needed so much *right away*. Fast forward to one minor breakdown (at least I have an office door to close) and a trip downtown for class where I'm taking a Negotiations class. On tonight's negotiation, I do the worst in the entire class. Yay.

Then I realize. I'm acting like a miserable jerk. My employees know I'm miserable, my bosses know I'm miserable. Getting towards the end of 2 1/2 years in school has made me very run down. I'm constantly exhausted, never getting enough sleep or time for the things I want to do. That, in addition to the situation at work, is making me a miserable jerk. No one wants to be around a miserable jerk. AND IT IS NOT PART OF MY NEW 2008 PLAN! :)

I WILL knock it off.

My employees don't deserve to be around an unhappy person (I sure don't like being around my bosses when they are unhappy). My friends and family don't deserve to be around an unhappy person. And, I don't deserve to be an unhappy person. Everything just piles up and sometimes I cannot handle it. But I will realize that school is almost over. (Though I really like it, it is just exhausting.) I will realize that my work situation is not that bad. I will realize that (queue Alicia Keys) EVERYTHINGS GONNA BE ALRIGHT. No more miserable jerk (or at least not too often).

To 2008...

I've decided. 2008 will be my year. There's a lot coming up this year, not just for me, but for the people surrounding me. I'll turn 30, my brother will turn 40, my mom will turn 60 and I will GRADUATE with my MBA all within one month. I've decided. I'll take control of this year. Granted, I know I can't control everything, but I can strive to make my life closer to what I want it to be.

I'll be working on being physically healthier. I'm not going out with the bold statement of "I'll only eat healthy food and I'll work out every day." I'll be realistic. I'm getting older and it is not healthy to be at the weight I am at. I'll work on being healthier through diet and exercise.

I'll be working harder at school. I have a GPA goal that I'd like to achieve and if I concentrate on my last two quarters, I can do it. I'll still be proud of what I accomplished even if I don't meet my goal, but a girls gotta have goals!

I'll be working on making myself happier career-wise. I'll be graduating in June and it's time to take a long hard look at where I stand in my career. Will I stay where I am? Will I get a new position where I am? Will I change companies? Will I move somewhere else? Who knows. But I will be trying to take my career into my own hands and spend far less time being miserable in my job.

And finally, I'll be working on having more of a life! Many things fall under this goal, especially once school is over. I'll be trying to spend more time with my friends and family. I'll also be trying to spend more time OUT DOING THINGS. I don't go to as many places as I'd like, for many reasons...school, work, homework, hard time finding someone to go places with. I will be doing more things even if it means going out by myself! And who knows? Maybe I can find a nice fella to join me. :)

To 2008...

Final Pics Posted

Last pics posted on myspace (Hong Kong pics). It's after midnight here, we are leaving at 9:30am so that's it for the China blog! Thanks for reading!

Last Day!

Today is our last day of the trip before we leave! It was a lot of fun, but I'm ready for my own bed, shower and water I can drink.

Last night we went to Macau and didn't get back to the hotel til 6am. It was fun, the casinos there are really nice, especially the Venetian. They took my money though. :( We took a ferry to get to Macao, about an hour there from Hong Kong. Then we had to take a ferry back, and when we were ready to leave (about 2am), the next available ferry wasn't until 4:30am!!! And it didn't go to the island that we were staying on, so we had to cab it after that, it was a huge ordeal but we made it back in the end!

I'll post my Hong Kong pictures in the morning before we leave. Should be by 9pm Saturday your time. See you soon!

Hello from Hong Kong

For anyone who hasn't been able to see my pictures, try this link and then click on pics. There are a ton! Hong Kong likes my blog, I can finally see it! So thanks to Al and Massiel for the comments. Yes Al, I feel something like Shaq here. Especially in Tibet.

www.myspace.com/74058875

I posted Shanghai pictures in this link. We are just about to start our first meeting in Hong Kong. We have another one this afternoon and then a bunch of us are going to Macau. It will be so much fun! For those that don't know, Macau is where all the really nice casinos are at around here. There is no gambling allowed in China, but Hong Kong is still considered separate from China. I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures!

The class is getting a little anxious to go home. I thought it was just a small group that was feeling that way, but it seems to be just about everyone! The trip has been great, but everyone is exhausted and can't wait for the comforts of home! :)

Goodbye Shanghai, Hello Hong Kong

I am sick. Boohoo. Yesterday the whole class went to an automative manufacturer and then to a Chinese acrobats show. I didn't go cuz I was sick with a really bad sore throat. Still feeling kindof out of it today, but have to check out of the hotel and go somewhere! We leave for the airport at 3pm to go to Hong Kong, our last city. We arrive tonight and then we have all day Friday and Saturday there. We have some activities planned on those days. Hoping to go over to Macau to check out the casinos as well. Then Sunday we come home. It has been a long trip, feels like I've been gone 6 months! But still looking forward to seeing Hong Kong before we get back. That's all for now, I have pics, but the computer won't let me upload them here. Sorry!

Hello from Shanghai!

Hello! Nothing big to report on this end. We arrived to our hotel in Shanghai last night. I've never been so happy to see a hotel bathroom. Needless to say, the accomodations in Tibet were very minimal. I'll leave it at that. The hotel here feels like heaven.

Today, our group was supposed to go to a business meeting over 2 hours away. We ended up canceling, and we were very happy to do that! I went to the Pearl Market and bought some jewelry. Then I went to McDonalds. First time here, not bad! I learned that in China, KFC and McDs are the same thing and the Chinese do not see a difference. After that, Jen and I walked around for about an hour and a half. In the rain. We saw a few sights in Shanghai. There aren't as many historical sights in Shanghai as there were in Beijing. So I haven't posted any pictures, I only took a couple so far. Now I'm going to kick back at the hotel and then we have a group dinner. Post again tomorrow!

Good Morning! Monday

Happy Labor Day (in a few hours when you people stop being so behind). Hope everyone's having cookouts and BBQs. We will be traveling all day, we get into Shanghai tonight. Post again in the morning. Miss you all!

Sunday Evening

Lhasa pictures posted on myspace! Just shopped and read today. Nice.

Sunday Morning

Hello again from Tibet! Yesterday we saw the dali lama's summer and winter palaces. I'll post pictures later, don't have enough time right now. We also saw a monestary. I thought monks couldn't talk? Apparently they debate. Wait til you see the pics. Then we had a group dinner which was pretty good. Pretty jam packed day by the end of it.

Today is a free day, our last full day here. I'm planning to do some shopping and relaxing today. Tomorrow we leave for Shanghai, with a layover in Chengdu. So we'll be traveling all day.

I'll try to post my pics on myspace this afternoon, so you won't see them til tomorrow. Also, all my Tibet pictures didn't get loaded from the first day so I have to fix that too!

See ya!

Tibet

First full day in Tibet today. We're going to the Potala Palace and a couple of monestaries and then to a group dinner. We are all feeling the altitude. It is definitely quite hard to breathe and easy to get dizzy or get a headache. So we have to take it easy! Oh darn.

I posted pictures on my myspace page. They're not very organized because I'm having trouble with the language on the computer. So I also couldn't put captions. The photo folder called 4 contains great wall pics, 5 contains panda pics, 6 contains Tibet pics.

See ya!

Greeting from Tibet

I LOVE IT HERE. Although one sentence sums up the experience so far. People stare and point at me and it is quite uncomfortable. HA! It could be worse, I could be the guy in my group who is 6'10. They are taking pictures with him and treating him like he is a god.

Today started off with a trip to the Giant Panda Breeding Facility. It was amazing and my new favorite is the red panda. I want one! I'll post pictures in the morning (Friday evening your time). Then we flew to Tibet. Wait til you see the pictures. It is truly amazing and I am so glad I am here. We were greeted with white scarves that symbolize innocence. Tonight most of us walked around a temple and to the little markets (while being stared at of course) and then to dinner. I had chicken curry because I know you are going to ask. I also tried a local soup. It was a'ight.

Tomorrow we're touring Potala Place where the Dhali Lama spent his winters. We're also going to some monestaries. Post again soon!

Thursday Night

Tired! And stinky! The wall kicked our butts today, especially mine. I literally thought I was going to pass out and wanted to cry. The wall, it tried to conquer me but I WOULD NOT BACK DOWN. :)

Anywho, not sure where I left off. But we went to the Great Wall today and then hopped on an airplane to Chendu. Bad idea. Let me tell you, there were some VERY stinky people and there was no showering between the wall and the plane.

We are at a 5 start hotel, the Sheraton. But we are only here for 11 hours! What a waste. It is the nicest hotel and we don't get to take advantage. We're only sleeping here for the night and then in the morning we go to see the Giant Pandas! YAY!!! I will get my picture taken with a little (or big) panda. After that, we fly out right away to Tibet. So again, not sure when I'll be able to post again. We also don't have our luggage yet so I can't post Great Wall pictures since my camera cord is not with me. Sorry! Good night/good morning for you!!

Oh, PS...not sure if I mentioned that I can post to my blog but I can't actually view my posts. So if anything is wrong, shoot me an email at danam531@comcast.net. See ya peeps.

Ni Zhou...Good Morning Wednesday

Hello! For those of you that couldn't view my pics on myspace, I think I fixed the problem if you want to try again.

It is hot here. Enough said.

Yesterday, we had breakfast at the hotel and then made our way to Lenovo. Lenovo makes PCs and notebooks, etc. They have some really great innovation (see pics on myspace from Innovation Center). We weren't allowed to take pics in the factory so there aren't many. Businesses here are a little different in general. They have campuses where their workers are housed. They have a nice big space for parks and basketball courts, etc. This allows them to keep their employees on the premises and to pay them a lower wage by giving them housing.

After Lenovo, some people went to the Summer Palace. I did not go because I was wearing a suit and it was very hot as stated above. Some of us didn't get the memo that the clothing requirements changed to business casual. (There was no memo.)

The rest of us came back to the hotel and changed into cooler clothes. Then we hit the markets. YIKES!!! These people are scarey when they want to sell stuff! They all yell at you and some of them hit you with whatever they are selling. If you don't want to buy from them, they hold onto your arm and you have to drag them away with you. Needless to say that this is a negotiation type place, you don't pay full price. I bought a backpack (needed for the plane) and an iPod speaker set. Then we drove through Tian'anmen Square.

I went with the Dean to get some snacks for a little shindig we were having later and we went to the Olympics store. INSANE. They couldn't keep things on the wall long enough before someone would come up and buy it. Tons of people. Hot.

I had to go back to the hotel and shower because did I mention it was hot? That night, we all had a 2nd fitting of our suits that we had ordered. Mine was way too big so it needs alterations. By this time, it was about 9pm and I decided to stay in for the rest of the night. Good thing, because my roommate went out with everyone trying to find some dumpling restaurant and they never found it. Walked around for an hour for nothing and didn't even eat.

Today is a laid back day. Our group has three business meetings and then the big group is going for a traditional Peking Duck Dinner. Tomorrow we hit the Great Wall and head out to Chengdu. So I may not be posting for a couple of days. I'll try to get in tomorrow, but we leave early and I'm not sure what time the business center opens!

Hope everything is well at home. What's with Owen Wilson? We Chinese keep up with the gossip of you strange Americans.

Tuesday Morning

Ni Hao! It is 7:30am Tuesday morning, 6:30pm on Monday night for you oh-so-behind Westerners.

Yesterday we went to the Olympic Committee. It was awesome! Did you know that tickets to the games will only cost about $12???? And they are reserving 14% of tickets for Chinese students, who will pay 5 yuen, or less than $1! The buildings are crazy. The birds nest is the main building, the pic is on my myspace account. Then they have this water cube where all the aquatics will take place. I couldn't get a picture of that. But the disconnect in this city is insane. See my pics, we saw the olympic countdown clock, and then on the road underneath it, there was a homeless man sleeping. Things are so off kilter here. The technology in some buildings is far more advanced than in the U.S. But then you realize how poor the vast majority of these people are.

After the Olympic Committee, our group had a meeting with an investment banking company who has a specialty in energy saving projects. A little boring, but the guy we met with was really nice. He was actually American and wants to apply to Kellogg next year.

After our 2nd meeting, our group went off to the market. We each had at least one suit tailor made. They were about $100. We get them delivered to our hotel tonight, I'm very curious to see how they turn out! The tailor has a great reputation from our dean. When we were waiting for our last team member to get measured, some of us went upstairs to the food court. INSANE. You have to haggle for everything in this country! They run up to you and want to sell you food. And everyone is wearing those masks on their nose and mouth which is very creepy. I know, its more sanitary, but it was still a little weird! So we finally went to dinner at the Pink Loft. Its a Tai place. It was really good, but everyone was exhausted so we finished up and went back to the hotel for some R&R.

Today we are getting breakfast at the hotel and then heading over to a meeting with Lenovo. Lenovo is IBM in China. Should be very interested. Then I think we have lunch and, drumroll please.....FREE TIME! We haven't had much, so everyone is excited.

OK, will post more tomorrow. Hope everything is well in the U.S. I hope Karla is keeping my cats alive. :)

Good Morning! Monday

So internet access is a little sparse and I'm having trouble posting, let alone uploading pictures.

If you want to check out my pictures, go to:

or go to myspace.com and find danam531

Yesterday (Sunday) we had breakfast at the hotel (yummy!). Then we headed over to the Forbidden City, which was the emperor's home. After that we went on a hutong tour. They drove us in a rickshaw (someone takes us on this bike that has two seats behind it). The hutongs are a little "neighborhood" if you want to call it that, where many of the poorer people live. They arranged for us to have a meal cooked by someone who lives there. It was pretty good, didn't settle quite well in the stomach. But it was interesting to hear this lady's story.

After that we went to another place that used to be the empress's home. That was pretty neat, you could really imagine her walking around there.

After that, we so happened to meet up with a representitive from the 10th district of Illinois (Chicago). He met with us for about 1/2 hour. It just happened to be that he was on our plane and agreed to meet with us.

After that, we went out to dinner. It was so cool! This restaurant had a big "lake" in it and then there were boats floating in the lake. You actually get in the boat to eat. This was traditional Cantonese food. People ordered drunken shrimp (still moving), chicken where you had to eat the bones with it, etc. I tried a few things, nothing outrageous (I know, you're surprised!)

After that, we all went to a little bar on a rooftop after walking to find a different bar for almost an hour.

Another long day! Today we are going to meet with the Olympics Committee and some other good stuff. Talk to you soon!

Good Morning!

We're here in Beijing! It's 7:30am and we're getting ready to head over for some breakfast. Last night's dinner was salad, a banana and a Special K bar. LOL. I hope breakfast is good! Today we're headed to the Forbidden City and then lunch with local families. Will post pics when I have them, haven't left the hotel yet.

So far the flight's on time! Keep your fingers crossed. See you in two weeks.

Packing Dilemma

So anyone who has talked to me about my trip knows the packing dilemma. I can only check one bag, and it has to be less than 44 lbs. Today is my last free day before I leave, so I have attempted to get packin'! I know that my suitcase weighs 10 lbs and my stuff I have to bring for school weighs about 10lbs, so I have very little left for two weeks of clothes (business suits and casual wear), shoes & other items.

I got everything packed and the final moment arrived. How much does the bag weigh?

Drumroll......................................

45 lbs.

I swear to you that there is not one extra sock that I can take out, I have packed SOOO light!

Problem solved, I smashed everything into a smaller bag. 43 lbs. WHOOHOO!

One Week

OH. MY. GOD.

7 little days.

7 little days to get an individual statistics homework finished, get a group statistics homework finished, study for and take a statistics final, BEGIN a 50 page paper with my China group (yes, not yet done yet), set up in-country meetings for China (yes, not yet done yet).

7 little days to plan budgets for the marketing department, plan next year for the database department, make sure everything is going to be taken care of at work while I'm gone.

7 little days to shop, get shots and pack.

7 little days to see my friends and family. And don't forget about cleaning the house and shopping for having everyone over on Saturday.

AAAAUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to cry.

10 Days!

Monday, July 23, 2007

One Month!

In exactly one month, I'll be boarding a plane with 27 of my closest new buddies for the trip of a lifetime.

Jen is my roommate, say hi to Jen:
Jen is one smart cookie! She works at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago as a Senior Project Manager. I think she fully understands every single thing in the world that I just cannot figure out!

The other members of my group are:

Darren: attending Kellogg for several years now, one class at a time since his work is not helping out with tuition! Darren has been in my group before and we survived! You learn to hold onto good group members. Also one of the student leaders of our class.

Bryan: I've been in classes with Bryan before but never had any conversations with him. I've learned now that he is originally from Boston, is balancing work (a wind energy firm), school and a long-distance relationships, and is a pretty cool guy overall!

Lakisha: I've never met Lakisha before this class. She is actually in the school of engineering, but was able to join the school of management for this trip. She is raising a little girl all by herself, going to school and working (Com-Ed)! Sorry, no pic since she does not formally attend Kellogg.

Want more details on the trip? Read on!
If you want more than what is here, let me know. I cannot post too much information due to security restrictions at Kellogg.

In Beijing, we'll be meeting with the Olympics Committee. As you probably know, the summer Olympics will be held in Beijing next year, so the city is busy planning! We'll also have lunch with local citizens and of course, see the Great Wall!! On our last evening, we have a Peking Duck dinner (a local favorite). We'll spend four full days in Beijing, leaving lots of time for business meetings for our group (we're doing research on businesses who are becoming environmentally-friendly in China), and hopefully a good amount of time for sightseeing (Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Square, temples). To the left is the hotel we are staying at - cool, huh?!

In Chengdu (a short trip), we'll get to hang out with the Pandas! They have research bases here and giant panda reserves.

Did I mention we get to see Tibet? We'll be in Lhasa for two full days. There won't be any business meetings since Tibet is not really a business-inclined country! Mostly we'll be doing sightseeing and resting. Resting is stressed here because the altitude is extremely high (12,000 feet), so it is very easy to become sick for the remainder of the trip. Tibet is very religous and we have tips on certain ways to walk and dress for this portion of our trip in order to avoid offending the locals.

We're in Shanghai for three days. More business meetings here! But we'll leave time to see an Acrobats show and have a couple of special dinners. Lots of fun nightlife and shopping on the waterfront here!

And the remaining city that we will visit is Hong Kong. I'm very excited about
HK! We're there for two days and will (of course) have several meetings. Look at the awesome pool at the hotel we're staying at!

That's about it. Lots of exciting new things to see and do on this trip! And only one month to go!

Monday, June 25, 2007

Less than 2 months!

Only 59 days left until I leave for China. I don't know which is more unbelievable...that I'll be in a country that is so foreign to me, or that I'll be off from work for two whole weeks. It seems like the trip is SO far away until I look at my countdown calendar and I realize it's coming up much faster than I realized.

I'm in a group with three pretty cool people and our China project will be on the environmental impact on business in China. Did you know that 16 of the 20 most polluted cities are in China? My group is 2 women, 2 men so hopefully I will have a roommate in my new female group member. Pretty good luck that we ended up in the same group considering there are only 5 women in the group of over 20! We're hoping to get the bulk of our project completed before we travel. Then, we'll only have to complete our in-country interviews. We hope to do these all in Beijing (home of the Olympics next summer, so very focused on cutting pollution) so that the rest of our trip can be pretty relaxing!

59 days and ticking.....tick.......tick...............tick

The Details

Here are some of the places I'll be visiting (its not just China!). We're not allowed to say *when* we'll be where due to a lot of Anti-American thoughts out there nowadays. But this should hold you over! :) I listed each place we're going to and a few great links in case you're interested in checking it out. I can't believe I'm going to these places!!!

Welcome to my blog!

Hello all! I'm starting a blog that will track my trip to China in August. I'll (hopefully) be able to post pictures and details of places I've been so everyone can enjoy my trip. See you all soon! Only 68 more days until I leave, EEEEEKKKKK!
